Licking Paws Itchy Ears
Dogs who lick their paws a lot and have very itchy ears may be doing this because they are reacting to grains in their diet. (As always check with your vet).
Here are two great recipes for dog treats that are grain free.
Cheese Biscuits
3 cups garbanzo bean flour, plus extra needed for rolling
1 cup cheddar cheese
¼ cup powdered milk
2 tablespoons safflower oil
¾ cup warm water
Grated parmesan cheese for topping
Pre Heat oven to 375°
Mix flour, powdered milk, and cheddar cheese. Add oil and water. Stir into dough. Add some more flour (up to ¼ cup) until dough rolls easily. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and roll to ¼ to ½ inch thickness. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Store in refrigerator in airtight container.
Liver Crunchies
1 pound ( 2 cups ) beef liver.
2 eggs
1 ½ cups garbanzo bean flour.
½ cup cheddar cheese shredded
Pre Heat oven 300°
Puree liver with eggs in food processor. Add mixture to flour in large bowl and stir in cheese. Turn onto baking sheet covered in grease or non-stick foil. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and cool, peel off baking sheet and cut into treat size. For soft treats refrigerate treats, for crunchy treats return to oven and bake at 150° for three hours until treats are hard and crunchy. Twice-baked treats can be stored at room temperature.

Fun Facts about Toy Fox Terrier

Papillon History
The dwarf spaniel of the 16th century, depicted in many paintings by the Masters of that era, is the dog that became known as the Papillon. Although the Papillon owes its name and much of its breed development to the French, it was Spain and Italy that gave rise to its popularity. The Bologna region of Italy probably developed the largest trade, selling many dogs to the court of Louis XIV, transporting the dogs through Spain on the backs of mules.
This little hardy dog acquired it name as the breed developed the distinctive erect-ear type, the ears being set obliquely on the head and so fringed as to resemble the wings of a butterfly. Papillon is the French word for butterfly. This breed-type is said to have developed during the days of Louis the Great but the cause of the change remains largely theoretical. It is noteworthy that both drop-eared and erect-ears occur in the same litter and are judged together in AKC shows.
First represented in the American Kennel Club in 1935, this delightful little dog enjoys great popularity in both conformation and performance competitions. As ratters, they are extremely useful. Too small to kill a rat outright, they will worry it until it is exhausted then dispatch it quickly.

Fun Facts About the Bulldog
- The Bulldog originated in the British Isles.
- The name "bull" appears in "Bulldog" due to the breed's connection with bullbaiting.
- The first Bulldogs were bred for ferocity only and eventually began a line of fighters, developing keen savagery and courage so as to be rendered veritably insensitive to pain.
- In 1835, when dogfighting as a sport became illegal in England, the English Bulldog had seemingly outlived its usefulness; however, fanciers set themselves to preserving it and eventually set themselves on eliminating the undesirable savagery.
- The Bulldog is featured in the Disney film "Lady and the Tramp."
- Despite their small size, Bulldogs can weigh up to 50 lbs.
- Warren Harding owned a Bulldog named "Oh Boy."
- Calvin Coolidge owned a Bulldog named "Boston Beans."

Rescued puppy takes the biscuit
Coastguards have helped rescue two puppies which climbed part of the way down a 150ft (46m) cliff in Kent.
Springer spaniels Ben and Toby became trapped 30ft (9m) down the cliff after escaping from a garden with their mother Lucy on Monday.
A hunt began when Lucy returned without her pups. Ben was rescued using climbing equipment on Tuesday evening.
Toby, who was hidden by gorse bushes, was tempted with a biscuit to make his own way up on Wednesday.
Dog owners have been advised to use leads near cliff tops and not to attempt to rescue animals which fall over the edge.
Georgia Grover, one of the people who helped search for the dogs, said: "We could hear them whimpering and crying all the time."
She said the coastguards had been "fantastic".
People who attempt to rescue dogs themselves are putting themselves in grave danger
Peter Legg, coastguard
Peter Legg, Coastguard senior watch manager at Dover, said it was important that people did not try to rescue dogs which fell over cliffs.
"People who attempt to rescue dogs themselves are putting themselves in grave danger.
"Severe injuries and worse have resulted from this scenario.
"For this reason, we are always very willing to assist when dogs do fall over cliffs," he said.
He said Ben and Toby had suffered dehydration and shock but were now safe and well.

Unusual Dog Breeds
Everybody has heard of the basset hound or the beagle. This type of dogs has proved to have many qualities or has been advertised a lot. The influence plays also an important role:if one of my friends. to whom I compete has just bought a pitbull, I should definitely bring about a Tossain. How about the Polish Owczarek Nizinny? i know nothing about it so this shouldn't be my choice. There are many breeds of dogs left on this planet which prove to have more qualities, yet, are unpopular. This article will present you some of these breeds.
The affenpinscher
This is the smallest dog in the breed which also presented us the schnauzers. The affenpinscher is thought to be the most suitable for a family pet as it is very intelligent, easy to train of a good demeanor. They have a dark fur and have always shown affection to human beings.
The anatolian Shepherd
This dog breed is of a medium size and has proved to be very courageous. This breed is very powerful and loyal and it is used in U.S.A especially for military and hunting purposes.
The basenji
The dogs from this breed are medium sized muscular dogs and are also named the Africa Barkless Dogs. What is funny is that they ever bark because they don't want to do so as researches have shown they are not mute. They are extremely known in Africa for their hunting skills. They are not suitable as family pets but their aversion to humans can be diminished if they are handled properly from an early age.
The Bouvier des Flandres
This small and steady dog breed is somewhat similar to the terrier one . Their fur is generally in dark shades and they have proved to be very calm. At the beginning they were bred as herders in France but nowadays they are used for police and military purposes, as well as guidance for blind persons.
The central Asian Ovtcharka
The Central Asian Ovtcharka includes only large and muscular dogs. They appear to be very loyal and fearless dogs with strong protective instincts which makes them being used as watchdogs. As any other large dog they have their ears and tail cut from an early age.
The Polish Owczarek Nizinny
This dog is of a medium size muscular dog with a long fur which covers its eyes. It can be used as a family pet, being very loyal, yet they shouldn't be left alone because they are notorious for the 'disasters'
they cause in this situation.
All in all what we do know is that many dog breeds are not so famous but they prove to have some qualities which cannot be surpassed. They may be great hunters or family pets; the idea is that we should pay much attention to them as they are really fantastic.

Dog Names
Learn how to choose the perfect dog name for your puppy...
So you've brought home your new puppy, it's time to name your new animal friend but you’re running short on ideas. Choosing a name for your dog can be hard if you aren't feeling very creative, so here we give you a head start with the basics and some great ideas to help you choose the perfect name for your puppy.
Three Basic Dog Name Guidelines
1. Pick a name your dog can easily recognize. Dogs usually respond better to one or two syllable names. If you do want to go for a dramatic and unusual long name, consider whether you can easily shorten it to something a bit simpler for your dog to understand.
2. Avoid dog names that sound like the standard commands of No, Stay, Sit, Come, Down or Fetch. For example "Joe" is probably too close to "No". It can be difficult for dogs to tell the difference between similar sounding words.
3. Choose a name that's both easy to call out and one that you are happy calling out. Remember, you will be calling your dog's name out in public places at times and shouting out “Parsnip“ in the local park, may leave you feeling a little embarrassed! You also want a name that will work well when you are straining your voice to call your pet as he disappears into the sunset chasing after a rabbit!
Looking For Dog Name Inspiration
Start with the obvious. Take a long hard look at your new little friend he may be telling you his name without you knowing. Look at his appearance, behavior, personality, and disposition. Names like Spot or Red may come to mind. How about Bandit for a dog who steals things or Rebel for a stubborn dog?
Then look elsewhere for inspiration. You can name your dog after another famous dog, for example Pluto, Pongo, Lassie or Digby. What about your favourite sports, movie, music or comic strip star?
How about choosing a dog name after a member of your family or friend of a figure from history like Napoleon, Alexander the Great or Rasputin? Take a look at your environment or think about your favourite place they will give you more ideas.
Remember, the dog name you choose for your puppy says as much about you as it does about your pet. It shows how you view your dog and your relationship with him. But other people may judge your dog’s character by reference to its name and might therefore react negatively or fearfully to a ‘dominating’ name when meeting it. It is a good idea to use a dog name that conveys the image you want your pet to have.
Also, pick a name that will grow with the pet. For example "Tiny" may be less appropriate for a full-grown dog.
Whichever method you choose, have a good time doing it and choose a name that you will want to keep.
Teaching Your Puppy Its Name
Pick a dog name that pleases you and stick to it. It can be confusing for your puppy if you keep changing your mind. Your dog will learn his or her new name quickly if you use it often. When you call your pet, use his name. Do not say "here puppy". Calling your pet by his name will help him to become familiar with it and with your voice as well.
If choosing a long name keep in mind the shortened version. A long name will inevitably be shortened, but it may ruin the effect that you were originally looking for.
Above all have fun and choose a name you really like. Your puppy will undoubtedly become your best friend and only you can find just the right name.

Health Insurance for Dogs
Should you seriously consider buying a dog health insurance policy? Yes, you should. Here's why health insurance for dogs is a good idea:
Dog health insurance saves you money. As with just about all other costs, veterinary expenses have increased rapidly in recent years. Without dog medical insurance (or more accurately, veterinary insurance), you are responsible for paying for everything: routine checkups, preventive procedures, emergency care and disease treatments. That will run into hundreds of dollars. Why not get some help?
Dog Health Insurance: Quick Cost Facts
- Health insurance for your dog, like health insurance for yourself, has annual premiums and deductibles.
Pet insurance premiums depend on the breed of your dog and the type of policy you decide upon. If you have more than one dog, there is usually a reduced rate after the first policy. Dog health insurance deductibles can vary as well. The average annual deductible is about $100.
- You may choose among different coverage plans which are based on your dog’s age, breed, and pre-existing medical conditions. Some policies even consider the dog’s lifestyle; for instance, whether your dog is purely a pet or a watchdog, too.
Health Insurance for Dogs: Quick Coverage Facts
- Dog insurance healthcare plans can vary greatly. Some canine health plans are quite comprehensive, covering annual checkups, routine care, vaccinations and other preventive medications, and spaying/neutering, as well as illnesses and accidents. Others only cover unexpected sickness or injuries.
Dog insurance coverage for emergencies begins immediately on most new dog health plans, with a 30-day waiting period for illness and other claims.
Your dog’s age can affect your dog's health insurance coverage. Typically, policies begin veterinary healthcare coverage when the dog is 6 to 8 weeks old, although some will start when the dog is younger. Similarly, some dog health insurance companies only will cover dogs under 8 years old unless the animal was already insured with them before turning 8.
- Many dog health insurers will not cover your pet if she has a preexisting condition or a terminal illness. Some will insure the dog only if the condition is controlled or stable, usually for 6 months.
With all these options, it is important you check out the various dog health insurance companies, their pet insurance policies and corresponding dog healthcare plans.
In short, if you care about your dog, you should care about his health. If you care about your wallet, you should care about your dog's health insurance coverage, too.

Insurance Issues
Homeowners' Insurance Resource Center
Did you know that in most states it is legal for insurance companies to charge homeowners higher premiums or refuse to renew a policy based solely on the owner's breed of dog? Surprising as it may sound, more and more dog owners are being told they will be dropped by their insurance carrier if they refuse to give up their dog, even if they are long-time customers and their dog has never bitten or attacked anyone.
So what's a responsible dog owner to do? The Canine Legislation department has compiled the following resources to assist you in your efforts to find insurance.

Some Intereting History on the Great Dane
The Great Dane is one of the most elegant and distinguished of the giant breeds. It is believed that the breeds origins can be traced to Irish Wolfhound with mixture of old English Mastiff. The breed itself having existed for over 400 years to serve as a Boar Hound in Germany. Europe's erstwhile boar was one of the most savage, swift, powerful and well armed requiring a superdog to hunt it.
In 1891, the Great Dane Club of Germany adopted a standard, or official description of the breed. In 1889 in Chicago, the German Mastiff or Great Dane Club of America was founded with G. Muss-Arnoldt as first delegate. Two years later the club reorganized as the Great Dane Club of America.

Dog's Laugh
Researches say the long, loud pant is the sound of a dog laughing. This sound has a calming effect on other dogs.
When the sound was played in a kennel all the barking went quiet within about a minute.
People who study dog behavior have varying opions of what the sound really is but, the do agree, to other dogs it's a sound worth keeping quiet for.

Saw this on the web and want to pass it alon.
Michael Rubin was out walking his two dogs (a Golden Retriever and Border Collie). The Golden who is a 6 month old pup ran towards the edge of a pond and was grabed by an alligator.
Rubin at this point jumps into the pond and starts to wrestle with the alligator. He manages to throw enough punches that he is able to pull the pup from the alligator's jaws.
The pup is doing fine. I would just like to say way to go Rubin.

History of Bischon Frise
The Bischon is descended from the Barbet or Water Spaniel. The Bichons were divided into four categories: Bichon Maltais, Bichon Bolognais, Bichon Havanais, and Bichon Teneriffe. Which all originated in the Mediterranean.
Because of their happy disposition, they traveled often, and where used as items of barter by sailors. Generally believed that Spanish seamen introduced the breed to Canary Island of Teneriffe. In the 1300’s Italian sailors returned them to the continent, where they became favorites of Italian nobility.
Their popularity skyrocketed in the court of Henry III(1574-89). Also they where a favorite of the Infantas in Spain. The famous artist, Goya, included a Bichon in several of his works.
In the 1800’s the Bischon became a “common dog”, running the streets, accompanying the organ grinders of Barbary, leading the blind and doing tricks in circuses and fairs.
In March 5th, 1933 the official standard of the breed was adopted by the Societe Centrale Canine of France. The President of the International Canine Federation proposed the name Bichon Frise. On Oct 18th, 1934 was admitted to the stud book of the French Kennel Club.
In 1956 first Bischon litter was whelped in the US. In 1959 and 1960 two breeders in US acquired Bichon and they became breeds origin in US.
Entered in Miscellaneous Class on Sept 1st, 1971. Oct 1972 breed was admitted to registration in the American Kennel Club Stud Book. April 4th, 1973 breed became eligible to show in the Non-Sporting Group at AKC dog shows.

Just wanted to touch on some interesting facts about Yorkshire Terriers
Did you Know:
Classes for Yorkies have been offered in America since 1878
A reporter stated in 1870 “They ought no longer be called Scotch Terrier, but Yorkshire Terrier for having been so improved here.” and the name was changed to Yorkshire.
The Yorkshire traces to the Waterside Terrier, also a “weaver dog”
General consensus is that it represents the bred-down issue of crosses between Skye Terrier and Manchester Terriers.
Made debut at bench show in England in 1861 as a “broken-haired Scotch Terrier”
In its beginnings belonged to working class, especially weavers. Comments were made about how the dog’s fine, silky coat were the ultimate product of looms.
Yorkshire is a “human-made” breed.
First year shown at Westminster was 1878.
